Silkn at Home Laser Hair Removal deviceHome Skinovations Ltd. announced recently that the Silkn device was cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for home-based removal of unwanted hair under the direction of a physician. Silkn, powered by the innovative and proprietary Home Pulsed Light technology (HPL), is clinically tested and physician approved for safe, quick, and effective removal of hair by patients in the convenience of their home. Silkn will be available exclusively through physicians.

The efficacy and safety of Silkn was tested in a multi-center clinical study involving 4 medical centers in North America and Israel over the last 12 months. A total of 150 patients self treated with Silkn in physicians offices as part of the study, and the initial hair count as well as the post-treatment hair count of these patients was monitored by the investigating physicians.

An average reduction of 50% in the hair count was monitored three months post three bi-weekly treatment sessions. No adverse effects were noted in the course of the study, and the users of Silkn recorded an extremely high level of satisfaction with the device and their results.

Home Skinovations will be launching Silkn into the US market in Booth 339 at the 2008 American Society of Laser Medicine & Surgery (ASLMS) annual meeting to be held in Kissimmee, Florida from April 2nd to 6th. A clinical study on Silkn conducted by Dr. Tina Alster titled The Effect of a Novel Low-Energy, Pulsed Light Device for Home-Use Hair Removal will be presented as part of the ASLMS scientific program on April 6th at 10:40 a.m.

Dr. Tina Alster, who is an internationally acclaimed dermatological laser specialist, is quoted as saying: In the clinical studies I conducted with Silkn, I was impressed with the devices efficacy, safety and ease of use. I look forward to offering Silkn as an essential component of my hair removal practice.

Additionally Dr. Jerome Garden who also participated in clinical studies with Silkn has said: In studies at my practice, patients were able to safely, easily, and effectively treat themselves with Silkn. In follow-up surveys, patients reported satisfaction from the use of Silkn.

Silkn is poised to significantly alter the manner in which physicians and home-based patients treat and manage hair removal results, noted Thomas Goslau, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for Home Skinovations. He further stated that, as a physician-directed device, Silkn will enable physicians to maintain and even maximize their share of one of the most highly requested aesthetic procedures in the US today, all the while offering their patients the convenience and comfort of carrying out hair removal treatments in the comfort of their own homes.

Now that’s an incredible piece of news! I wonder for how much will they sell it! It would be a down-from-heaven-alternative to the classical removal devices! (I know I had enough of the pain and the noise)

I’m surprised FDA would approve it since they’ve been pretty strict on a lot of the laser hair removal devices. Actually, I just re-read, and realized it’s only been cleared by the FDA, but not actually approved. Anyhow, pulsed light technology isn’t very effective for hair removal, and neither is RF (i.e. radio frequency in which some hair removal clinics use). It’s temporary and not permanent like some manufacturers claim. Just be careful on that before spending a lot of money on it. There’s a pretty good forum called ‘hairtell’ (www.hairtell.com) with tons of info on laser hair removal. By the way, I am not affiliated with them, so I’m not advertising. :P

So we still have to wait… that’s sad. I knew it wasn’t permanent, even so it’s far better than my at-home-braun-doing (that I left aside for a while, since my skin is so sensitive when I’m pregnant, so I have to go to a beauty salon to be taken care of - which I would totally addict to if it wasn’t for the kids and no one to let them with in the mean time). So there’s more than ipl.. rf i didn’t heard of it up until now…

I’ve just purchased a silk’n and after using one bulb to do both forearms and one lower leg, I’ve realised that it’s going to cost me a fortune. At $70 per bulb, it will cost me about $300 each pass of my body. So, if you add the cost of the machine and $300 every two weeks, it’s going to cost me $2600 for 6 treatments. I could have it done by a professional for that much.

So if your willing to pay much more for something that may or may not be as good as a professional service, go ahead, you’ve got money to burn. In their marketing it states that it’s cheaper, well its’ not!!!!!!!

Comment by Ronit on March 2, 2009 @ 9:49 am

George’s comment is untrue. A full body treatment takes about 350 flashes. A bulb has 750 flashes. That means you use one bulb per two treatments. Six treatments in that case equals 3 bulbs = $70 x 3 = $210

The silk’n is selling for $632 on Amazon, and includes two bulbs. So you only need to purchase four more. In other words, it will end up costing you $632+$140 =$772.

That’s it! $772 for six treatments

    DEFINITELY cheaper than a professional.

It is cheaper than a professional in most cases. Sometimes the lsaer hair professionals by me have specials which will do it extremely cheap but good luck finding those! Thanks for the post.
