Summer is in full swing, and what’s the best way to put your best face forward? Experiment with the latest in must-have makeup colors and trends, starting with fun, new looks for eyes, says celebrity makeup artist Gita Bass.
I like to use ROHTO eye drops to not only clear redness, but they cool and refresh.
“With the return of bold colors and dark liners, eyes are definitely center stage right now, and there are so many fun, dramatic looks to try,” says Bass. “Lots of people are afraid of trying new things with eye makeup. Not every look works for everybody, but there’s never been a better time to experiment!”
Bass, who has created some of the most eye-catching looks for celebrities like Minnie Driver, Heidi Klum and Keira Knightly, offers her insider insight on some of the summer’s hottest makeup trends:
Whiten up: If the sun, salt water, chlorine and other summer irritants have left you with bloodshot eyes, it’s best to “whiten up” before applying make-up. “Red eyes are never a good look, especially when your makeup is calling attention to your eyes,” Bass says. “I like to use ROHTO eye drops to not only clear redness, but they cool and refresh.”
Colored eye liner: “Have fun with it! Take advantage of the amazing new neon colors for eyes and really stand out,” suggests Bass. “Bold purples, blues and emerald greens are the most flattering and look really striking when placed above the upper lash line. Make sure to add lots of mascara to give the eye definition and to offset the color.” Keep the rest of your face neutral because one bold color is enough.
Cat’s eyes: “This look takes practice,” says Bass. “Dot a sharp eyeliner pencil along the upper lash line close to the roots and begin to slant upwards where your pupil ends. How far you extend the line depends on how dramatic you want to be. Blend the line with a flat lip brush to get the thickness you want. Now dip the brush into a liquid or gel liner and trace the line.” Bass suggests that you curl your lashes and put on three layers of mascara. You can even add some individual false lashes on the outer corners to really add drama and sexiness!
Pastel shadows: Bass says that pastels are a wonderful way to reflect the beauty of nature in your makeup. “When wearing pastels, it’s important to choose a shade that works for your personal coloring,” advise Bass. “Pink, rose and pale green tones are great for a darker, olive complexion, while lilacs, blues and greens work well for paler skin and lighter hair.” For a soft, daytime look, use a sheer wash of color on the lids and add a slightly darker version of the shade on the crease for definition. For a more dramatic evening look, add a darker liner and some shimmer.
ROHTO eye drops are available in three formulations - Cool, Ice and Arctic - and are available at most drug, mass and grocery outlets nationwide, as well as online at drugstore.com.
