Tria and Silk’n Home Laser Hair Removal

Most women and men are in a constant war against one thing that keeps coming back-body hair. Be it the back, legs, or arms, most people shave, pluck, or wax it away on a regular basis. A new industry aims to make this entire process easier and more effective for customers, that of laser hair removal. Two products, Silkn and Tria, offer hair removal devices that can be used in the comfort of users own homes. While both devices operate on similar principles, there are also differences between the tools.
Both Silkn and Tria have been approved by physicians or the FDA as safe for at-home use. Silkns system is called Home Pulsed Light and costs $800. Tria costs $995 and both can be purchased by any person wishing to use it. It is also suggested for purchase by spas. The product website offers a one-year warranty, free shipping and handling, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
These two devices are for use on similar areas of the body. Silkn is indicated for areas below the neck and not on the face. This is because much of womens facial hair is dormant and does not grow. Use of the device may actually stimulate hair growth and increase facial hair. Suggested parts include the legs, underarms, arms, and bikini line. Tria is similar; it should not be used around the eyes or on the face, head, ears, neck, nipples, anus, or genitals. These parts contain darker pigments, are more sensitive, and have greater hair density. Use of Tria can be dangerous in these areas.
Both devices require repeated treatments to work effectively. Silkn takes approximately 10 minutes per treatment on a small area, such as the armpits, and around 30 minutes for an area such as the legs. Treatment should be repeated every two weeks for the first three to four sessions. Repetition is necessary to get all hairs in their growing phase. Users may not see immediate results, but tend to see many hairs fall out after about two weeks. Afterwards, the device is used if any hairs have grown back.
With the Tria, the procedure should be repeated every 4 weeks for 6-8 treatments for best results. After the first treatment, no change will be seen, although some redness of the skin is normal. Following the second and third applications, users may see the hair become finer and lighter in color. However, if hair appears thicker, this is also normal. These hairs are simply in a different phase of growth. After treatments four and five, less overall hair will be seen. It is particularly noticeable where hair tends to be dense. In six to eight treatments, most hair will be completely gone and pores will appear very small. However, it is normal for a few hairs to continue to grow. Treatment should be continued on these hairs.
Both Tria and Silkn work best for customers with certain hair colors and skin tones. Silkn is indicated for those with black or dark brown hair, although it will work on medium to light brown hues. The device does not work well on white, grey, and blonde hair. The company emphasizes that the tool should not be used on those with darker skin tones. This is because Silkn works by sensing the difference in melanin, or pigmentation, between the hair and surrounding skin. Since there is little to no difference between hair color and skin color in those with dark complexions, the device will not sense correctly and may result in blisters, burns, or pigmentation changes.
The Tria has nearly identical indications. It is not for blonde, red, white, and grey hair, nor for those with deep brown or black skin tones. Those people of African-American, East Indian, Native American, or Pacific Islander heritage should also avoid the device because high amounts of melanin in their skin may cause skin damage. These at-home devices both operate on the principle of photothermolysis, in which the hair shaft and surrounding skin absorb different amounts of light generated by the device. Melanin in the hair absorbs light that is turned into heat and prevents regrowth of hairs. However, skin remains at a normal temperature and is not affected in any way. The light affects hairs in the anagen growth stage, in which hairs are actively growing. The process does not affect hairs that are in the resting catagen and telogen phases. Hairs have an 18-to-24 month growth phase and the procedure must be repeated over this period to affect all hairs in the growth process.
Both the Tria and Silkn devices are touted as safe and comfortable for users. The Silkn emits light only when in direct contact with the skin, which avoids any unsafe emission of light towards the eyes. The low level of energy causes a slight amount of heat and tingling on the skin. The sensation may be more pronounced for those with thicker hairs. The device has five different settings for varying sensitivity levels. On the other hand, Tria utilizes a skin sensor. It detects whether the device is appropriate to use on various areas of skin. Tria users also may feel a sensation of heat, but this decreases as hairs disappear over time.
The Tria and Silkn laser devices aim to make users beauty regimens even easier, by taking the process into the comfort of the home. For customers looking to eliminate the weekly or daily chore of hair removal, these tools may be the answer to their beauty prayers.

any suggestions would be awesome… and i’ve tried waxing. that absolutely doesnt work. it ripped skin off. eeek! anyway, thanks.
question… the main reason i would like to try an at home laser hair removal system is because i have unwanted facial hair. i am not talking about a couple hairs i have to pluck either. when i was 18 i made the mistake of shaving because i was embarassed about it. now i am really embarassed!!! if i go without shaving i have a lil beard on my chin and part of my neck. is there an at home product that would be safe for this? i really don’t understand what the difference is between that and any other place on my body that grows unwanted hair, besides this one is waaay more visible and embarassing. what would u recommend??? i’m seriously talking beard, if i let it grow. and i’m willing to sink the money into a product that would help.
