Glimpse Intuitive Skin Care
With the rise of health conscious consumers and the importance of “going green,” modern women continue to become more environmentally conscious. Increasingly ingredient labels are getting scrutinized, particularly skincare and beauty products. Reflective of that trend, Glimpse Intuitive Skin Care by XanGo offers products free of harsh chemicals and maximizes the antioxidant-rich whole mangosteen fruit as well as other natural ingredients.
“If you say your product is natural, then you should be able to prove it,” said Beverly Hollister, senior vice president at XanGo, LLC and the chief architect behind the Glimpse skin care line. “One of XanGo’s top priorities is to follow green chemistry standards. We are pleased to be able to offer Glimpse Intuitive Skin Care, a product line free of harmful toxins often found in personal care products.”
Today there are more opportunities for consumers to explore natural beauty products because of the growing interest in green cosmetics. In fact, the natural and organic product industry was among the fastest growing in 2008, according to a 2009 report in Organic Monitor. Market research from NPD Group highlighted in 2009 noted that 64 percent of women are choosing natural over conventional beauty products.
But it may surprise consumers to learn how many skincare lines and cosmetics contain harsh chemicals or dangerous toxins. In a recent assessment of ingredients in 15,000 selected cosmetics and personal care products, the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit focused on threats to public health and the environment, found that 22 percent of all conventional products — 3,300 commonly purchased items — may be contaminated with harmful ingredients.
In contrast, products such as Glimpse feature green chemistry that includes select botanical ingredients that are nutrient-rich and free from dangerous ingredients. The cold processing of Glimpse preserves the natural potency of the phytonutrients found in the mangosteen and other active ingredients, while minimizing the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process.
“Consumers of skincare products need to take the time to educate themselves about what to look for that can be potentially damaging,” Hollister said. “It’s not enough to see the claims and how products are marketed on their front label. You need to take a close look at the ingredient label to see what you’re really putting on your skin.”
According to Natural Solutions in collaboration with retailer Whole Foods, five of the top toxic ingredients most commonly found in personal care products include parabens, polyethylene glycol (PEG), petrochemicals, sulfates and synthetic fragrances. Side effects from these chemicals may include hormone disruption, pore clogging, skin rashes, eye irritation or damage to the reproductive system. In contrast Glimpse notably does not contain any of these ingredients or those on a longer list of 15 found to contain toxic elements.
Hollister noted that consistent with the Glimpse clean and green promise, XanGo has signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. The coalition’s goal is to protect the health of consumers by requiring health and beauty industries to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems, and replace them with safer alternatives.
By signing the Compact, XanGo pledges that all products in the Glimpse brand meet European Union (EU) formulation standards, which are much stricter than the U.S. regulations concerning the use of chemicals in health care products. By adhering to the EU standards, none of ingredients in Glimpse will harm the earth or wildlife. Glimpse Intuitive Skin Care also is listed as a phthalates-free cosmetics company on ThinkBeforeYouPink.org Web site, a project of Breast Cancer Action that encourages companies to have products free of chemicals known or strongly suspected of causing adverse health conditions.
The “intuitive” nature of Glimpse refers to its self-adjusting formulas designed to address the complex needs of a person’s skin. Glimpse is comprised of two basic systems, one providing “nutrition” for normal to dry skin, and the other designed for normal to combination skin. Both systems include a cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer and retail for $200. For more information, visit www.glimpseskincare.com.
