Treatment SaverThe process of cosmetic surgery continues long after you’ve left the medical establishment. To get the best results after the surgery, you’ll want to treat you skin with extra care. How you care for your skin will depend somewhat on the type of surgery you undergo. Here is an overview of basic skincare following a few of the most common procedures.

Botox

Botox is a cosmetic procedure that does not involve cutting the skin open. As such, skincare following Botox is relatively simple. For the first several hours after the procedure, you should avoid touching your face. And for two weeks after that, try to stay out of the sun. This means no sunbathing and no tanning beds. Keep your skin clean, but use hypoallergenic products specifically made for sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion

A cold pack can help to relieve soreness or swelling after a microdermabrasion procedure. For some people, rinsing the face with cold water is the best way to reduce soreness. When cleansing the face, avoid any products that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or other ingredients that are hard on the skin. You will also want to avoid products designed to exfoliate the skin with microdermabrasion, you’ve dealt with more than enough exfoliation. After washing your face, be sure to use a moisturizer to keep your skin from drying out.

Facelift

During the first few days after your facelift, you’ll want to keep your head elevated as much as possible. Failure to do so could result in facial swelling. Sleep with several extra pillows to keep your head elevated at night. During the day, your skin will probably feel chapped and dry. Use hypoallergenic moisturizing products to banish dry skin.

Sometimes, a special drain for excess fluid will be attached under the skin. At the end of the drain is a small bulb. Be sure to empty the bulb whenever it fills more than halfway. If you end up emptying the bulb more than three times a day, you should call your surgeon.

Rhinoplasty

You will likely experience quite a bit of facial swelling during the first week following rhinoplasty. To ease the swelling a bit, you can apply a cool compress to your face. Swelling can also be limited by sleeping with your head elevated on multiple pillows. It is important to avoid sun exposure for the first two or three months following the surgery. Excessive sun exposure can result in severe discoloration of the nose.
