Causes of Acne

According to new research by Dr. Chris Kroodsma, a dermatologist in Illinois, simple blockage of the pores at the skins surface may be the primary cause of acne.
In other words, if there are dead skin cells, oil, makeup, sunscreen or other material blocking oil flow out of the pores, acne pimples may form, Dr. Kroodsma said, who used physical models of the acne follicle and principles of physics to demonstrate this process.
His research contradicts current theories regarding the cause of acne.
Although this sounds like common sense, current dermatology literature and resource books do not mention blockage of pore openings as a possible cause of acne, he said. The reason this is not currently considered is that top acne researchers several decades ago simply guessed that a blockage of the pore opening could not cause acne, and this has been widely assumed to be true until now.
Because his findings challenge widely-held beliefs about acne, current treatments are also drawn into question. According to Dr. Kroodsma, until now researchers have assumed that a combination of unknown defects work together to cause acne.
However, research during the past several decades has failed to find such defects, likely because they dont exist, he said. A lot of research involving new acne treatments has understandably but unfortunately followed this path as well.
Dr. Kroodsma said that there should be a new emphasis on acne prevention. Simple lifestyle changes, he said, could prove to be more effective than medication.
Other related research by Dr. Kroodsma has shown that repeatedly touching the face clogs pores even more than application of creams, lotions or makeup. It is for this reason Dr. Kroodsmas favorite prevention tip is Dont Touch Your Face.
With a better understanding of how to prevent acne, Dr. Kroodsma says We may even be able to decrease the worldwide use of antibiotics, which are widely used to treat acne. For more information visit: peoriaskin.com.
