Don’t Forget Sun Protection Over the Fourth of July
If something has to burn over the Fourth of July holiday, burn the hotdogs on the grill, but keep skin protected from the sun. The food can be replaced; skin can�t.
Yet many people will forget to apply sunscreen or think they don�t need it if it�s cloudy or they only plan on being outside for a little while. �We should think about our skin daily, and not just when we go to the beach or a baseball game,� said Dr. Julie Pena, a board-certified dermatologist in Tennessee and founder of Likewise Skincare. �People are exposed to sun everyday and they don�t even realize it - just driving in their car, walking by windows at home and work, walking from the car to a building.�
“Just because you are not wearing a bathing suit and laying out by the pool doesn�t mean you are immune to the sun�s harmful rays, which makes daily skincare all the more important,” Pena said.
�UVA rays are the rays that actually go deeper as they penetrate the skin. These are the rays that are thought to contribute to aging and even melanoma,� she said. �We are exposed to the sun�s rays 365 days a year, even on cloudy days.�
To that end, Pena created a line of skincare products designed to protect from daily sun exposure.
�Blocking these rays daily by wearing an elegant, zinc-based moisturizer can keep you looking younger longer and at the same time protect you from skin cancer,� said Pena who created the Likewise Skincare line of sunscreen and skin products.
But don’t save sun protection only for special occasions. �We want people to use our products daily before they leave the house. We want them to think of our products like toothpaste. You use it every morning.� By building sunscreen in a daily moisturizer, something most people use anyway, sun protection becomes a simple part of a morning routine.
The Likewise products also meet the new guidelines set out by the FDA in June. While many products will have to change their labeling, Likewise products contain protection against both ultraviolet A and B rays thanks to their high percentage of zinc oxide.
For Carey Scott of Franklin, Tenn., Likewise Skincare has given him peace of mind. Because skin cancer runs in his family, Scott has been using the Likewise moisturizer nearly every day.

Although Scott, of Franklin, Tenn., has an office job, he uses Likewise every morning to protect his skin even when indoors.

Over the Fourth of July, he plans on working in the yard and maybe cooking out. He knows his face won�t burn. He hopes for the same for his food.
